GST Council Meeting Updates GSTR-4 Deadline Extended to June 30

During the first GST Council meeting following the formation of the new government and the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, a number of important decisions were made on Saturday, June 22, 2024. Key results were disclosed by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, including an extension of the GSTR 4 filing date and modifications to the GST rates on a number of commodities.

Extended Deadline for Filing GSTR 4

The GSTR 4 filing date has been extended by the GST Council until June 30. The goal of this extension is to help small taxpayers. Furthermore, if demand letters issued under Section 73 of the GST Act are unrelated to fraud, suppression, or misrepresentation, interest and penalties on these notifications should be waived for the fiscal years 2017–18, 2018–19, and 2019–20. To allow for modifications to GSTR 1, a new form called GSTR 1 A will also be issued.

A standard 12 percent GST rate on milk cartons, as well as a comparable rate on sprinklers and solar cookers, has been suggested by the Council. Following the success of a pilot project, biometric Aadhaar-based registration will be implemented nationwide in stages.
