Microsoft Silently Incorporates New Features into Windows Notepad After 41 Years

Microsoft Windows 11 Update:

Back in March, Microsoft tested an upgraded Notepad application with integrated spellchecking. Now, the tech giant has quietly rolled out this enhanced Notepad to Windows 11 users. First introduced in 1983, Windows Notepad remained largely unchanged for many years, with only minimal updates across different OS generations. However, significant improvements have been made recently.

Under the support of Windows 10 and 11, some of the most substantial changes to Windows Notepad in years have been introduced. In July 2018, Windows 10 brought long-awaited updates to the simple text editor, including text zooming, wrap-around find/replace, line numbers with word-wrap enabled, and performance enhancements for handling large files.

Windows 11, unveiled in late 2021, included several noticeable Notepad enhancements. These upgrades featured auto-save and session restore, a new tabbed interface for managing multiple files, and dark mode compatibility. The latest addition to these improvements is a cohesive spellchecking feature, which allows users to correct spelling errors. This new feature highlights misspelled words or questionable text with red squiggly lines, provided users update their Notepad app or if the feature is auto-updated and activated by default.

Users can toggle and customize both spell check and autocorrect features in the spelling correction menu. Additionally, some users have a granular toggle feature to disable spell checking for files using specific resource file extensions. While these updates have been a pleasant surprise for many users, there are concerns about feature creep. This risk has increased with the discontinuation of WordPad in Windows 11 after 28 years of service as a ‘lite’ word processor. Microsoft now recommends users switch to either Notepad or Word for their text processing needs. The introduction of the spellchecking feature to Notepad is a welcome surprise for users, adding a premium tool to the classic text editor.
